Do you like wooden fishing boats?
Greece as a country surrounded by sea used to have thousands of them and generation after generation the construction of those vessels become part of our cultural heritage. Although it began from the need of fishermen to earn their living it evolved to a beautiful and unique art form.
But all this comes to an end. Sign of the times you might say, old handmade things tend to extinct in the modern era. In this case though there is a difference. European Union is paying a lot of money every year, for more than 30 years, for the destruction of the wooden fishing boats.
It sounds like a sick mind's obsession, isn't it? And yet it is true. Every fisherman can collect a huge subsidy if he destroys his boat beyond repair, which has led more than 10.000 traditional boats into piles of wood thrown to the dump.
I don't have any words to comment this craziness, only a few pictures. Below is a tiny photographic tribute to those beautiful vessels and the people that still work taking care of them.
