The screechy sound behind my back startled me! I was lost behind my camera, trying to frame a bunch of bougainvillea flowers with a few decorative columns, in the blurry background. It turned out that it was only a store's roller shutter but I was too distracted to notice the lady with the flowery dress that was opening her shop!
I like to walk in the old town before the stores open. Everything is more quiet, there are less people on the streets and I can have a more clear view of the town's actual face!
As so many others places, this town has two faces. The shiny one that is presented to the tourists and the real life. The former, with all those amazing buildings perfectly renovated, the blooming bougainvilleas and the glamorous and expensive shops and the latter, just a few meters away, with the air-condition units hanging graceless on the front of the buildings, the artless graffiti that informs us what soccer team is supporting anyone with a spray can in the hand or the weeds growing on old, untended stone walls.
I like them both, the lustre of the commercial and the roughness of reality and most of all I like their coexistence. I wouldn't feel comfortable in a place too perfect or too neglected. In my mind, the one somehow balances the other and gives to the whole a touch of familiarity. Anyway duality and entropy (the tendency of every system towards disorder) are essential parts of our universe and trying to override them, is just pointless!
On the other hand as I look the picture of this lovely cat enjoying the morning sun, I am coming to the conclusion that a major problem of mankind is overthinking. If we could just enjoy every little thing like animals do, we could regain a part of the paradise that we were once banished from :)
