Yep, smart contract capability opens up so much more than just DeFi.

It's just DeFi is the buzz dApp right now and for them to succeed in the smart contract arena, Cardano is going to have to attract DeFi platforms to build on their network.

Something I'm not sure that they will be able to do at the scale required for Cardano to really challenge Ethereum.
