Introduction
You will probably agree that patience is grossly lacking in modern society. If you are a regular road user, you see impatience everyday. People do not have a minute to wait and they start shouting at other road users. The traffic light turns red and they start boiling inside. They reach a zebra crossing, and they want to run it over. Road aggression is just one practical example of impatience in our society today. You probably know of other examples. Well, ours is a world where everything is meant to happen really fast - fast cash, fast food, supersonic transport, and the rest of them. But in the midst of this fast race, we miss a very vital quality that could in some occasions save life. That quality is patience. Here are 3 ways to cultivate patience.
1. Plan very well: People are usually impatient because of lack of proper planning and organization. For example, if you are to attend a job interview in a distant city and you did not plan to arrive the venue several hours ahead, you could be stuck in traffic. Proper planning in this case would mean that you leave very early so that even if you catch traffic, you still know you have much more time, and you could afford some patience. So generally, good organization will help you to put into proper perspective, situations that may call for patience. Because you have the time, its easier to wait than when you are hard pressed with time.
2. Accept the reality: Blowing your horn angrily at other drivers will not make the traffic to disappear. Shouting at the bank cashier will not make the long queue disappear. Sometimes, we just need to accept things the way they are. Things do not always happen as fast as we want them. So if you are caught into a situation where you cannot help patience, then be realistic and accept the situation. In this way, you can learn to wait and in the process, you will develop patience.
3. Try to be productive: Yes, trying to remove your mind from the unpleasant situation is another way to be build patience. So while preparing to drive through a usually congested road, why not take a book or magazine to read if traffic slows down to a halt. Or you could listen to a favorite audio program. This could help you think about other things apart from the traffic. The waiting rooms of most public places usually have books for people to read, or a channel to watch. This is to help you wait. So too, plan to do other things, to be engaged with something while you wait. This is a great way to develop patience even when you do not realize it.
Conclusion
Patience can save lives. When you are patient, you make better decisions. Patience makes you a more mature adult. Patience is truly a virtue, why not go for it?
