A mushroom is a kind of fungus. The mushroom that you see above the ground is actually just a small piece of fungus. The rest of the fungus, the mudguards, are hidden under the ground or in the wood. Mushrooms grow on dead branches and leaves, in the ground or on dead wood. And they also grow on trees that are going to die. So if you see a mushroom on a tree, you know that tree is sick.
