Today has been a day of testing my new drone for bracketing for exterior shots. Bracketing is particularly important in low light like winter light. When we take pictures of a house with the camera facing into the sunlight, it creates an extreme contrast situation where the camera is looking into the sun and the house casts a very deep shadow. That huge contrast makes it very hard to see the house in its best light.
The cure is bracketing, just like we do for what we call window pulls. It is a little more complicated on these exterior shots because the tint and white balance need to be controlled.
Anyway, the problem that showed itself is that Gimp wouldn't work with the DNG files that the Autel Evo was throwing out. DNG is a variation of the RAW concept of maximum unprocessed sensor data.
An example:
The underexposed picture has a usable sky while the underexposed house has a usable house and ground. We need to combine the two in order to put the house in its best light.

Open source seems to always have an answer.
And so it did this time too. The solution led me to another RAW/ DNG processing software called RawTherapee that looks like an interesting piece of software in its own, but the value to me is that it works to allow Gimp to open DNG files so I can edit them in layers.
I'll spend the rest of the evening messing around with this new configuration and put some more pictures in tomorrow.
