I went on a 3 days road trip in Northern Italy around 2 months ago. We drove around 200km through the Dolomites (getting there and back home not counted) and hit 7 (!) different mountain passes (not all of them are in the pictures below though).
Both me, and the friend I went with, like photography so we went out for every sunrise and sunset. Mountain passes are especially handy for sunrises as it saves you the hike up and you can sleep a little longer that way 馃榿
The Dolomites are covered with larches, which are needle trees that lose their needles before Winter, which is why they turn completely orange.
For our first sunset, we planned to go on a hike and stay up for golden hour. But when we reached the peak, we already saw that too many clouds were rolling in, unfortunately. As it was pretty cold, too, we changed plans and just hiked down. Still, the view was incredible and I will come back for better light in the future.
Next morning, next mountain pass. And here we were blessed with some nice light again luckily.
During the day we went on a hike to a lake. It's known for its really saturated blue color and I was a bit disappointed it was already frozen. But well, at least it looks a bit more unique than all the other pictures of that spot.
And the view on the way to and back from the lake was really nice as well. The light on the larches even looks good at plain sunlight with a blue sky.
For sunset, we went to the same spot as for sunrise because it was on the way to our accommodation. I am really really happy that I was able to take this shot there, you can read more about that in my end of the year blog post.
For our last sunrise, we did a hike to this plateau. It was cloudy but the sun made it through at least a little bit.
The interplay between sunlight and clouds is something I really like to shoot. It just brings out the atmosphere very well. I often use a 70-200mm lens to bring out details of mountains.
After the hike, our road trip ended. Even it was only 3 days, there were so many possibilities to shoot with 3 sunrises and 2 sunsets. I hope you enjoyed seeing some of my work and I'm always happy about feedback. Cheers!
