On several photography trips in mostly Upper Austria, Lower Austria I was able to take a lot of different pictures of the Lapwing. It is a bird that is breeding here in late spring and summer. It has some very impressive mating flights that it shows of regulary during mating season. When the lapwings have a nest or small children they are very aggressive against any intruders or other birds. Usually they don't fight birds of prey like falcons or buzzards, but during breeding season they are very agressive and scare these predators away from their nest that is often situated in a meaddow or an crop field. It feeds primarily on insects and other small invertebrates. Lapwings can be found in mixed flocks even with other birds like the golden plover or other grass and meaddow birds. I like the colors of the plummage when they are shining in the colors of the rainbow.
