Today we are moving to a city with a lot of sun, heat, sea and history in Colombia; I am talking about Cartagena de Indias.
A tourist destination par excellence in the country, as it has the history of our independence, tourist sites of interest, a port where cruise ships arrive with hundreds of tourists and lots and lots of sun and fun.
For me fun is the main thing, because I like to say "I was there", "here is my photo", "to get there, you take such and such a road" and even "that place smells like that", because it is different to pass by than to get to know it.
I particularly divide Cartagena into three regions: the hotel zone, the historical zone and the zone of daily life.
Today I will show you a walk to:
Las Bóvedas de Cartagena or the Plaza de las Bóvedas.
Mis queridos #Hivetravels Hoy nos trasladamos a una ciudad con mucho sol, calor, mar e historia en Colombia; les hablo de Cartagena de Indias. Un destino turístico por excelencia en el país, ya que cuenta con historia de nuestra independencia, sitios turísticos de interés, puerto dónde llegan los cruceros con cientos de turistas y mucho pero mucho sol y diversión. Para mí la diversión es lo principal, porque me gusta decir "yo estuve allí", "aquí está mi foto", "para llegar, tomas tal vía" y hasta "ese sitio huele de tal forma", porque es distinto a pasar que a conocer. Yo particularmente divido a cartagena en tres regiones: la hotelera, la histórica y la de la vivencia diaria. Hoy les mostraré un paseo a: Las bóvedas de Cartagena o la Plaza de las Bóvedas.
Cartagena is a city for love; however, its history cannot be left out. This is very important because during the independence period, Cartagena was the site of great movements, battles and even its fortress served to protect the city.
Mainly taken by the Spaniards, after independence, it remained an important and strategic city for military activities.
I say this because many of its historical sites are linked to the military. These consist of castles, forts and the construction of walls that protected the city in those battles.
In this sense (without sounding like a history lesson) the Plaza de las Bóvedas was created.
It consists of 47 arches and 23 vaults to protect the Spaniards, store ammunition and generally defend the city walls.
Over the years, and once the Spanish empire was destroyed, it served as military barracks, prison for the rebels and was even an important point for the liquor industry.
Nowadays, it is used as a souvenir shop, where groups of artisans from the area offer their products for souvenirs and the much appreciated Cartagena hats which, to tell the truth, do not provide much protection but you are grateful to have them before the inclement sun that gives no respite.
Cartagena es una ciudad para el amor; sin embargo, no puede dejarse de lado su historia. Esto es muy importante ya que en época de la independencia en cartagena se llevaron a cabo grandes movimientos, batallas e incluso su fuerte sirvió para proteger la ciudad. Tomada principalmente por los españoles, luego de la independencia, siguió siendo una ciudad importante y estratégica para desempeñar actividades militares. Digo esto, porque muchos de sus sitios históricos están ligados a lo militar. Esto se componen de castillos, fuertes y la construcción de unas murallas que protegieron la ciudad en esas batallas.
En este sentido (sin parecer una clase de historia) se creó la Plaza de las Bóvedas. Es una obra constituida por 47 arcos y 23 Bóvedas para proteger a los españoles, guardar municiones y defender en líneas generales, la muralla. Con el paso de los años, y una vez destruido el imperio español, sirvió de cuartel militar, cárcel para los rebeldes y hasta fue un punto importante para la industria licorera. Actualmente, funciona como tiendas de souvenir, dónde se ubican grupos de artesanos de la zona que ofrecen sus productos para el recuerdo y los apreciados sombreros de Cartagena que a decir verdad, no protegen mucho pero se agradece tenerlos antes su sol tan inclemente que no da tregua.
Above the vaults
Getting to this historic place is super easy, as all the roads at the end lead to them. You can be in a street in the walled city and at the end of it you can see the walls; but always looking for the sea.
The vaults are yellow, so it is very difficult not to distinguish them, well, come to think of it, the whole city is very picturesque with bright colours, but I tell you, yes, they are unmistakable.
The shops are very colourful, the vendors are very friendly, they speak English/Spanish so their service is top notch.
If you go shopping, you can spend up to an hour there enjoying the products offered according to your needs.
Once you have finished this tour you can go up to the forts "San Francisco Javier and Santa Clara" to enjoy the view.

Arriba de las bóvedas. Llegar a este lugar histórico es súper fácil, ya que todos los caminos al final te llevan a ellas. Puedes estar en una calle en la ciudad amurallada y al final de ésta observar las murallas; Pero siempre buscando el mar. Las bóvedas son amarillas, así que es muy difícil no distinguirlas, bueno, pensándolo bien, toda la ciudad es muy pintoresca con colores vivos, pero les digo que si, son inconfundibles. Las tiendas son muy coloridas, los vendedores muy amables, hablan inglés/español así que su atención es de primera. Si vas a comprar, allí puedes pasar hasta una hora disfrutando de los productos ofrecidos según tu necesidad. Una vez terminado este recorrido puedes subir a los fuertes "San Francisco Javier y Santa Clara" para disfrutar de la vista # ESPECTACULAR que nos ofrece la altura.
Among the recommendations I have for you:
🌞 Hat. You saw in the pictures that almost all of us have it 😃.
🌞 Very, very comfortable clothes, the temperatures are high.
🌞Hydration. Although they sell there, don't forget to drink plenty of fluids.
🌞There is a tourist office and several people willing to give advice or a guided tour talking about its history and relevant facts about the view. We did not use it.
🌞 The site is CLEAN. It should not be scratched or damaged, keep as seen.
🌞 In the surroundings there are cafes to enjoy the view and at the top, in one of the viewpoints there is an emblematic cafe called "Baluarte" which is open to the public to enjoy the sunset. Unfortunately we found out about it too late and were unable to enjoy it (it will be left for a future visit).
Entre las recomendaciones que les tengo: 🌞 Sombrero. Ya vieron en las fotos que casi todos lo tenemos 😃. 🌞Ropa muy pero muy cómoda, las temperaturas son altas. 🌞Hidratación. Aunque allí venden, no olvides tomar mucho líquido. 🌞Existe una oficina de turismo y varias personas dispuesta a brindar asesoría o una visit guiada hablando de su historia y datos relevantes de la vista. Nosotros no lo usamos. 🌞 El sitio es LIMPIO. No se debería rayar o dañar, conservar tal como se observa. 🌞 En sus alrededores hay cafés para disfrutar de su vista y arriba, en uno de los miradores hay un café emblemático llamado "Baluarte" que abre al público para disfrutar del ocaso. Lamentablemente nos enteramos muy tarde y no pudimos disfrutarlo (queda pendiente para una próxima visita).
