My dear community of #Hiverviajeros, if you go to Lima, you must be there. You can't miss this walk in its great Plaza Mayor, because the city is a place full of history and it preserves very well its architectural sites from the colonial times. This square, at first sight, tells the story of the origins of this city from its foundation back in 1535.

Come with me!

To begin this #photohistory, I want to tell you that I went to this same square in 2009; it was a fleeting and accidental trip and all the photos I had were deleted from my computer! ALL OF THEM! That's why I always kept the hope that my eyes would see again this architectural work that captivated me from the first moment.

And there it was, all imposing, beautiful and intact as I had left it; indeed, it was as if time had not passed and I'll tell you why.

If you look at the photo in detail, it's BIG! And it is a landmark for locals and visitors to the city. Among its attributes are that it was the main construction site at the beginning of the city, that it has in the middle a kind of vessel known as "kilometre zero" since all the points of the city start from there and that its name can be either Plaza de Armas or Plaza Mayor. That is under discussion. But as this is not a history lesson, here is a link for you to learn a bit more about it:

If you detail the photo: it is clean and tidy.

And I say this detail because Peru (or at least a large part of Lima), is full of dust (I don't know why) and its public transport is total chaos; whistles, shouts, queues, ambulance sirens, accompany the main avenues of this capital (I think many capitals are like that). But not here, here it's a different story:

Cars go at low speed, they respect the striping, there are no whistles, pedestrians pass calmly, it's clean surroundings. It is a respect they have for these monuments. And I'm talking about respect, because they don't need a policeman there to direct the traffic and tell you what to do.

I also think that since it is a tourist site, which brings money to the country, then they must know that the pedestrian comes first. There are no badly parked cars, in fact, not even pigeons litter the place. Everyone agrees to put their best face forward for the visitor.

Here I am already in the square. As you can see, there are not many pigeons (suddenly compared to Bogotá and its pigeons which are a tourist attraction). What's more, you have to enlarge the photo to get some. The green of the trees is green! It's clean, quiet, relaxed, noiseless, friendly. Everyone says hello, gives up their place. Believe me, I fell in love with every detail of this square.

In the vicinity of the square there are several historical sites which of course are also worth a visit. Some of them, like the Cathedral, are a museum. Its creation dates back to the same time as the creation of Lima and the arrival of the Spaniards, so imagine how much history it holds.

The first time I visited, I went in (because I love ecclesiastical tourism), and I was amazed. This time I was not so lucky because I went at a time when it was closed. But if you have your 4 soles, you can go in and enjoy its history.

I don't even know when the buildings are painted but they look beautiful.

My attention was drawn to the sign at the back not to step on the grass, I assume that people are tempted to do so to get their best photos.

This building is the municipality of Lima.

What you see in the background of the photograph is the government palace, also known as Pizarro's house in honour of one of its first occupants, Francisco Pizarro. This is the seat of the Peruvian leadership and I assume that is why it is so well preserved and clean, honouring its occupants.

A curious thing is that I did not see many policemen, guards or people guarding it, despite the fact that it has been the target of several attacks in its history. If you manage to go at noon, you will be able to appreciate the changing of the guard of honour; an event where they parade, play their military music and give way to the next platoon that will enter the guard.

I have to tell you that I crossed the pedestrian crossing twice more before I finished my visit, as I was fascinated by the respect for pedestrians.

We, as pedestrians, must also respect the signs and we all act in healthy coexistence.

I can only invite you to visit, walk around the square, go to the historical sites, eat delicious Peruvian food in the surroundings, buy some souvenirs and take lots of photos of this beautiful place that Lima gives us.
