The wireworm is a pest that is well known to horticulturists who plant a lot of potatoes. It is also known as the potato worm and should not be confused with the potato beetle. Although this worm also comes from a beetle.
It is not usually a very aggressive pest but it can become a problem. It can damage crops all year round but not in the same way. In spring it usually attacks plants during their sprouting and in summer or autumn it usually attacks already formed tubers.
It is not easy to treat with ecological methods but if good cultivation techniques are used its damage is little. A good crop rotation will ensure that it never becomes a pest. You can also apply solarisation on the ground in winter to eliminate the beetle larvae.
Its natural enemies can also help us so take care of the birds, frogs or toads and shrews because they are all our allies in the garden.
