Fatima al-Fihri: The Visionary Founder of Al Quaraouiyine University and Her Centenary Educational Legacy ~Women Wednesdays~
Hello friends of the community @hive-140084, Today's article is about Fatima al-Fihri, a woman unknown to most but who had great importance.
Fatima al-Fihri was born in the year 800 into a rich and powerful family in Morocco. When her parents died, Fatima received a large fortune that she knew how to put to good use.
Fatima was concerned among other things with the education of her fellow citizens and she dedicated much of this fortune to the founding of the University of Al Quaraouiyine in 859.
Al Quaraouiyine University is for some the oldest educational center in the world, including the famous "Guinness Book of Records". But beyond the controversy it was one of the first centers of learning and knowledge. He also created one of the best libraries of the time.
Another notable fact about this university is that it welcomed students from different cultures and religions, being a center of tolerance much greater than those we see in the universities in the area today.
Fatima al-Fihri was an example of what a person with money and power can do to improve the lives of the people around her and the entire community. Unfortunately today Fatima al-Fihri and other people like her have been forgotten. Today, intolerance and the use of power for short-term personal benefit prevail.
