A different publication to vary the repertoire a little and do something fun. Let's play chemistry...
How is it possible for us to play with snow when the temperature is above 0ºC?
We all know that the melting temperature of water is 0ºC so if the temperature is above zero there should be no snow, everything should be water. That's because we measure the air temperature but not the ground temperature, which is much lower and that's where the snow is so it takes much longer to heat up and turn into liquid.Does water always go from liquid to gas at 100ºC?
Well, no, water only changes from a liquid to a gaseous state at 100ºC if we are at sea level. And this is because the boiling point of liquids is affected by atmospheric pressure. So if we live in a city at 2000 meters of altitude we will only need about 93ºC for the water to go from its liquid state to being water vapor. Is evaporation the same as boiling?
No. A liquid boils at a certain temperature and becomes a gas but evaporation depends on the dryness of the air. If the air is dry, evaporation is rapid and if the air is humid, evaporation is much slower.
I hope you liked these curiosities about chemistry. I think I will do this more times. It has been fun to remember old studies and share them with all of you.
