A new movie Shaft 2019 was released on Netflix. This new movie is a sequel to the movie with the same title, both casting Samuel L Jackson. It has taken about 19 years to make a sequel. Many times, remakes are not hard to get a good assessment if it is not surpassed the originals in many ways. I just want to preview and found out why the critics and audience are reacting to this new movie Shaft.
The Critics of Shaft 2019
Rotten Tomatoes
This is the reaction from Rotten Tomatoes. Based on 99 critic reviews, 31% is given to Shaft, which is very disappointing. However, the audience score is very contradicting to Tomatometer's assessment. They give 94% based on 6,150 audience responses. So, what about the original?
Rotten Tomatoes
Rotten Tomatoes critic consensus about 2000 original Shaft is very different from 2019 one. Tomatometer is 67% based on 115 reviews, which is higher than the 2019 Shaft. In contrast, the audience score is 40%, which is much lower than the 2019 audience score. What is the reason for that? I personally think it is because of the actor's awareness of the public. Now everyone knows Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. But back in 2000, he is not this famous. It is only my personal thought, though.
IMDb
IMDb's response is not different. The scoring in IMDb is mostly based on the audience, and the scoring is better in 2019 than the original.

Preview with the Official Trailer
Personally, I enjoyed this trailer. Shaft has no special meaning. It is only the last name of the three generations; Samuel L. Jackson as John Shaft II, Jessie Usher as John Shaft Junior, and Richard Roundtree as John Shaft. So it is Shaft. No special meaning.
The trailer is somewhat comic. It is full of the culture of African American and their language. Recently, there are many movies produced with a variety of cultural background in Hollywood.
Anyway, I enjoyed the trailer itself. The rapidness of the story development and the proper usages of humor was good. If it is realized in the real movie properly, I might not be able to take my eyes off the screen. And the fact that the three generations work together just reminded me of the value of family to me. We like to be moved with this kind of intrinsic value. If the movie is really capable of delivering what we have seen in the trailer, it could be a great one, both funny and touching.
