As a photographer, I love to go around beautiful places, both naturalistic and historical, where to take pictures and enjoy the views in good company.
Today I want to share with a photo-gallery I had made from my exploration day in Monte Cimino, together with my friends Camilla and Elisabetta, last December. None of us had never been in Monte Cimino, even though it's a natural park not far from Rome, where Camilla and I still live and work, and Elisabetta had lived for many years. It's weird how often we choose to travel around, far away from our place, when many beauties are to be explored really nearby... and we never know!
The old-growth beech forest of Monte Cimino is a thermophilic forest and is a UNESCO site, as part of the world heritage natural protected areas. Thanks to the peculiar climate and atmospheric agents of the area, this ancient forest survived the last glaciation of the Quaternary, and it's still living today ad it adapted to the current Mediterranean climate. Indeed, the forest is influenced by the humid climate cause by the Bracciano Lake, located very nearby; also, the forest is only 35 km away from the Tirreno Sea, which allows it to keep growing even at only 400-500 meters of altitude, way lower than the beech forests typical of the Appenini mountain chains, which grow around 900 meters.
Apart from the historical, geographical, and naturalistic importance of this site, the most significant aspect is the way this forest makes you feel when hiking around. It's a full recollection with your own self, thanks to the silence of the clearing, or at least the few animals sounds.
There are some nice paths both for hiking and mtb, but we aimed at walking solely. We enjoyed a lot the visit there, and we were also very lucky with the weather. Usually in December it could be very cold, indeed it's recommended to go with hiking boots, in case of slippery terrain due to humidity of ice layers.
We ate our packed lunch in the middle of the forest and then we kept walking and exploring a little bit, until it was almost sunset. We then decided to go and we found ourselves enjoying the sunset from the road direction home. I couldn't but stop and take a photo, as it was really outstanding to see the sun going down to the lake.
Thank you for going through my pictures, I hope you enjoyed!
