Cub Scout Trailblazer day camp at camp Cowles on Diamond Lake 20 miles north of our house was today. It was a bit chilly, cloudy, and windy to begin the day but the sun managed to peak through off and on. We got a spit of rain about 1pm but only a sprinkle.
My boy is now a full fledged Lion Cub Scout. Today he got his neckerchief and slide which the color signifies rank. Orange is for the Lion and Tiger ranks.
After the flag ceremony we headed to the first of three zones. We were group C which meant we started in zone C which was fishing, games, and cub scout rules/oath/salute info.
We went fishing first and found a place on the dock. No bites but a few people caught a fish. One kid from our pack caught a 16" rainbow trout. It was catch and release though so he did not get to keep it. J enjoyed it despite no bites. We spent time playing the games, wandering, and fishing a little longer.
Lunch was from what ended up being 10:45 to noon. Our pack leader's wife was helping to serve the chicken noodle soup and then we picked up our bag lunch. We sat on a picnic table beneath the cool treehouse built in the forest and ate. J finally went and explored the treehouse after some prodding.
After we ate we headed for the next zone which was what he was most excited for. We started with the bb gun range and he got one of five on the paper and in the overly large bullseye. Next we went to the slingshot where we both shot the dog food ammo (seriously good idea, no metal to pollute with) at the hanging metal. Then we went to the archery. The bows were all set to a really mild draw weight which allowed the littles to draw. J did well and got 2 of 10 arrows to stick in the target, which was pretty good.
The final zone was the bmx, treehouse, and fire starting and dutch ovens. The treehouse turned to a capture the flag game and was a melee. He did not try the bikes but he has not fully learned to ride his bike yet.
Next as we were heading to the fire starting we stopped and watched as the wood was branded. I have to label the back and drill a hole so he can hang it up.
The fire starting is easy and he is pretty aware of how to do it. The dutch oven was another story. J was all in on it and was first to help with ingredients. They helped make a simple cobbler with canned apple pie filling, cake mix, and a clear soda. The prior one made then was shared with everyone for a taste of the goodness that is a dutch oven desert.
Pretty cool for his first day camp experience.
