Harold Land (tenor sax), Clifford Brown (trumpet), Richie Powell (piano), George Morrow (bass) and Max Roach (drums). From the album Clifford Brown & Max Roach (1954).
A walk in the park. It's spring and everything’s green. The sun's rays are shining through the leaves of the trees. An honest conversation between two old friends of old age. They tell their lifes in a relaxed way, with a loose narrative. They share the blues, the sad feeling of not being useful anymore, of being like old junk.
Parque del Recuerdo
The little birds chirp unaware of their complaints and the temperature is pleasant. The walk is long and the dialogue is about sports, cars, politics, young people’s bad behavior and whatever else they can think of. After all, they have all the time in the world to chat.
Max Roach
The theme starts suddenly and is explosive. Brown makes the first solo decreasing the intensity of the melody. He plays without interruption, with enough swing to move your entire body and Land makes a sound mattress behind him. Then the saxophone follows the same line as the trumpet. His phrases are sometimes complex. Now it’s Brown who makes the sound mattress for Land. The saxophone continues with a cascade of notes giving way to the piano. Powell plays quickly and suddenly hits the piano keys repeatedly. Then, Roach makes his drums solo in a frantic way. Now Brown and Land exchange four-bars solos, then two-bars solos and finally one-bar solos. The group reexposes the theme and ends straight away.
