The Jazz Messengers: Wayne Shorter (saxo tenor), Freddie Hubbard (trompeta), Curtis Fuller (trombón), Cedar Walton (piano), Reggie Workman (contrabajo) y Art Blakey (batería).

The group was a sextet integrated by some of the best musicians of that time in top shape, with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard showing his virtuosity, and three of the pieces were composed by tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter, the musical director. Shorter’s five-year tenure from 1959 to 1964 can be considered as the group’s golden age. The band’s playing is original, precise and with lots of swing, offering a powerful hard bop interspersed with reflective ballads. Their sound is intense and diverse due to the combination of the three wind instruments. The audience is enthusiastic and receptive, the original tunes sophisticated, the tempos and solos energetic, and Blakey plays with tremendous drive despite not performing any solo. This is a must-have album for all hard bop fans.

After an introduction by the rhythm section, the theme starts with changes in strength and intensity. Shorter immediately enters with smooth, well constructed phrases while the group plays a riff from behind to support him. Next Hubbard begins a quiet solo, but then warms up. He’s followed by Fuller, who plays slowly, as if he’s taking a sweet walk. After that it’s Walton’s turn, whose melodic line is full of chord sections. To conclude, the band restates the theme.
