Moments ago I found myself staring at some 50 odd books on various things. A few were fiction, some non-fiction, some technical books on automotive stuff, some magazines, DIY, motivational stuff and a biographies.
It's hard to maintain them when you live in a coastal city as the humidity does spoil the pages of the books over the years. More importantly, managing a collection of books when you tend to move around or travel can be hard.
I always thought about building a massive book shelf so I can store all my books. I have a lot and they are all currently boxed up. I take the ones I want to read and then they go back in again! For lack of space and time I haven't gotten around to making this idea a reality.
After moving cities and taking these books with me back and forth, spending a ton of money in the process, i'm sure now that I don't want to be doing this ever again. It's a tedious process, not to mention wastes so much money given the weight and size.
But reading ebooks isn't the same sometimes as I do this a lot more off-late. It's cheaper, easier to carry and doesn't waste precious natural resources. But sometimes, I just love holding a physical copy. Not all books are made the same, some are just exceptional.
This sentimental value drives a lot of us and our purchases of books. I certainly have a large wish-list online of titles I want to own someday and read. But if this past year is any indication, I don't think I will ever have that much free time on my hand to read 3-4 books in a month.
So i'm quite split between purchasing anything now and i'm considering selling or donating some of the books in my collection. I haven't found the right place to give them away just yet but I feel off-loading the ones I've read already, and the ones I'm unlikely to ever read again might just be a better idea than hoarding them another decade or so.
In the past, i'd carry a couple of books while traveling but the sheer weight and space some of them took made me switch to kindle which I actually got used to and even began enjoying. Even though I miss placing physical bookmarks and turning pages. But somethings have to change I suppose.
Now as I packed up a big carton full of books, ready to be put in storage a few days ago, i'm wondering if I made a right decision. I'm putting them away even as it has only a few titles remaining whic I haven't gotten around to reading yet. But I consume so much material in a day being online that I find it hard to dedicate time to reading a book at the end of the day.
The information overload is quite unreal!
It's quite a predicament for someone like me who has always enjoyed reading right from my childhood. As I write this down, i'm in a dilemma what to do. I think i'm gonna open up the box, find a title I have missed reading and just get it over with and figure out the rest from there.
