Good review. This film is based on Jean Bruller's novel, something I just read just now, which was also adapted by Jean-Pierre Melville in 1949, I didn't see any of them yet, but I've had the first one on my list for some time and seeing your review I was confused because I knew the film was shot in black and white. Interesting to know that there is a more recent version, although I think I'll see both anyway.
