Working with children and families can be quite an emotive area especially when the issues are related to physical and emotional abuse of young children. I've had to deal with information and evidence that not everyone will have the stomach for, and when the evidence is graphic and disturbing, it can be hard to try to deal with materials and photographic evidence sensibly and objectively.
I want to introduce you to a case study, it is loosely based on one of my cases that was represented in the London Courts. Most of the information has similarities to the case but have been modified to enable my fellow Steemians to engage in this activity. I'm inviting you to identify any factors that you think could potentially place the unborn baby at risk of harm. Where you believe there are no risk say so, and where you think there are, give an explanation in your answers. It would be interesting to know how you would vote if you had to make a decision on whether Michele should keep her baby or not. So let's get started.
For the purpose of your participation in this activity, I've provide some background and current information at the time the case was heard in court. Have a go and see what you think, I'm looking forward to your comments.
BACKGROUND:
Michele is 21 years old and has a long history of mental health issues which includes frequent episodes of psychosis. Her eldest child Amy (2yrs) was subjected to three separate incidents of frightening behaviour by her mother. The last incident was a serious cause for concern as Michele held a knife to Amy's throat and cut her hair off while making threats to kill. A neighbour heard Amy's screams and called the police. Amy was subsequently removed from her mother's care and placed in foster care. Records show Michele also have a tendency to misuse alcohol and crack cocaine when feeling low and suffers with depression.
CURRENT (6 years later):
Michele is 7 months pregnant and reports that she is in a steady relationship with her boyfriend. She no longer drinks, she gave up alcohol over four years ago and stopped doing drugs. She has a full-time job and says the father of the unborn child is standing by her, he is aware of her past and says he'll be there to help support Michele with the baby when it arrives.
