Lesbianism is a much debated topic now a days. Lesbianism in the most simplified form is the homosexuality of women. A female person is called a lesbian when she expresses her sexual and romantic desires towards another female. By the law of nature all living creatures are born with the inborn instinct to mate with the opposite sex. But lesbianism is the deviation from this law of nature; a lesbian will generate no feelings of romance towards the opposite sex but show feelings of romance towards the same sex being.
Lesbianism has become the order of the day in our secondary schools and even in our tertiary institutions. This menace is really a problem and it's it eating up our society especially the young people.
THERE ARE SEVERAL FACTORS THAT CAN CAUSE LESBIANISM, SOME OF THEM ARE;
馃泟 PARENTAL RESTRICTIONS:
Man is a social animal and should have a helthy social life. Most parents restricts their children from socializing with the opposite sex, with the intention of protecting them from juvenile delinquency. This is a misconception of what training which should not be. When people, especially youth in the formative years are separated from members of the opposite sex, they tend to develope a phobia (fear) for the opposite sex.
馃泟 MARITAL IMPLICATIONS
One of the consequences of lesbianism is that it endangers and breaks marriages and it makes the famale a single parents.
馃泟 PEER GROUP INFLUENCE
A peer group is a social group constituting of individuals of the same age, background and social status who share similar characteristics and interest. The friends one keep could influence one to engaged in this immoral act.
馃泟 SEXUAL ABUSE
Sexual abuse can also lead to lesbianism. A lot of young people have been deflowered by those they trusted, like their farther or brother, especially the so called "daddy's children". This people will try to convince them that there is nothing wrong with a farther or brother having sex with the daughter or sister.
馃泟 SCHOOL MOTHER AND SCHOOL FARTHER
School mother and school farther is a system in secondary schools where senior students take on their junior as their school sons and daughters. School sons and daughters have no option than to emulate immoral behavior exhibited by their so- called school farthers and mothers because of fear of being purnished. These school sons and daughters becomes addicted to it as they are being enticed to practice it.
馃泟 MENTAL HEALTH
It is well established that there are high level of psychiatric illness including depression, drugs abuse and suicide attempts among lesbians and gays.
馃泟 PHYSICAL HEALTH
Lesbians and gays experience a range of health problems directly related to their sexuality. Discrimination directly related with homophobia can affects a persons health. Researcher have shown that lesbians and gays are at a higher risk of certain health problems like heart disease, obesity, cancer, etc.
馃泟 RELIGIOUS IMPLICATION
Today's culture is sending confusing messages about this issue. Televisions, movies, and other forms of media try to convince us that it is normal. But this is very far from the truth, because it is an abomination before God.
Sex education programs should be introduce and made compulsory in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions of learning. The mass media should also educate the public on the consequences of lesbianism. Parents on the order hand should educate their children on the dangers of lesbianism so that we can win the battle against lesbianism practices.
However, if we do not take immediate and proactive approach to arrest this issue, the chain will continue and our children and the generations to come will face the consequences.
