What is the Oxy Genos hypothesis?

Is the idea that fire burns because it consumes a gas diluted in the atmosphere.

Lavoisier tried to isolate this mysterious gas with acids, so the name "Oxy Genos"(born from acid) that, according to Lavoisier gives animals more breath.
