Short term gains are more important for them than long term sustanance. They will not care about the destruction of nature now for their gains. They forget about the long term issues that will also impact them! There is a beautiful quote that goes something like:

it is only when the last tree has been chopped down that the rich will realise that they cannot eat money

Or something like that!
