I am attempting to write at least 500 words a day. I call it the Felt.Buzz Five Hundred (or #feltbuzz500. I write a five-minute freewrite and then add more words to get to the magic number…
The prompt is Main Street

"Meet me on Main Street," she had whispered into the phone before the line went dead. I knew better to call her back. The line would be bugged, and They would be listening.
She knew that too.
So the meeting place would not be Main Street.
We had a code, of course. All of us had developed codes. In a world where all communication is monitored no one spoke plainly.
Not if you value your freedom.
Not if you value your life.
Main Street. The meeting place would be at the bar where we first met. She had been wearing a t-shirt, with a signpost drawn upon it, that read "Main Street."
I asked her what it meant and she shrugged and said, "What does anything mean?"
I think I fell in love with her at that moment. She, of course, was indifferent to me. But that made the attraction stronger. I adored her. I would do anything for her. Even if it meant risking my life.
My Personal Safety Drone waited for me at the entrance to my apartments, parked with the other Drones.
…
It flickered into life as I passed it and followed me out of the door. I would have to lose it or disable it somehow, or I would lead Them straight to her. It was a criminal offence, of course, to interfere with a PSD. I would be picked up on suspicion of endangering my life and others, a crime that carried a minimum sentence of Life.
The streets were packed with people. Most were going to or from work, their PSDs hovering above their heads. I had grown used to the sight, but I remembered the first time I had come to the city, I had stopped open-mouthed in wonder until a Neighbourly Manners Officer had politely ordered me to move along.
There were several ways to disable a PSD, all of them illegal. The easiest way was to shoot it down but I wasn’t authorised to carry a weapon and I wasn’t brave enough to carry an illegal one. But I knew people who did and for a small price would blow the drone from the sky. But I had to find them first.
The back streets in the Forbidden Zone were always the best place to start if you wanted anything illegal done, of course. But the PSDs wouldn’t let you go there. It was forbidden. It wasn’t authorised.
It wasn’t SAFE.
Any restriction in freedom of movement was framed in this justification of Safety. And the PSDs were authorised to use force and disable the person under their protection in order to ensure their safety. In other words, the Drones could shoot you in the back if you ignored a warning from them.
I browsed the shops closest to the Forbidden Zone. Looking for faces familiar to me. There were people who somehow managed to flick between the Safe Place and the Forbidden Zone. It was they I sought.
(Today I wrote… exactly 500 words!)
As usual I wrote the freewrite in five minutes using themostdangerouswritingapp.com and then copied and pasted it into a googledoc, tied it up a bit and then wrote more words!
