# # A big hello to Worldmappin, the entire community, and especially its team. To everyone: Happy New Year 2026!

Today we visited El Retiro Park (Madrid, Spain) on an autumn afternoon. This year, autumn arrived rainy and cool, more so than we have been accustomed to in recent years. As a result, this large garden area in Madrid has taken on an appearance that has not been seen in a long time. Before we begin our visit, I would like to invite three friends to join me: @ineyashami @robotgirl2024 and @misticogama. I am sure that they will at least enjoy the black swans that appear in this post.

The [Retiro Park](https://www.madrid.es/UnidadesDescentralizadas/ZonasVerdes/Parques/Retiro/2021/Plano%20con%20puertas%20y%20viales.%20Jardines%20El%20Buen%20Retiro.pdf) has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001 (a little publicity 😁). For the inhabitants of Madrid, this old park has become one of the most popular places to stroll. A place that, in addition to paths and nooks and crannies, is also dotted with art. There is not a day of the year when you cannot visit an exhibition that complements the permanent presence of its unique architecture and the sculptures that decorate this large landscaped space.

Un lugar que, además de caminos y recovecos, también está salpicado de arte. >No hay día del año que no se pueda visitar alguna exposición que complementa la presencia permanente de su singular arquitectura y las obras esculpidas que decoran este gran espacio ajardinado.

# Access to the Park

The park can be accessed through several entrance gates, although on this occasion we will enter through the Puerta de O'Donell gate for a reason that will become obvious later on. There are several Metro stations near the park, including one (Retiro) with an exit that leads directly into the park. However, for today's proposal, the most suitable Metro station is Príncipe de Vergara. From Príncipe de Vergara Street, we will walk a few minutes to the Puerta de O'Donell, which will be our entrance to the Retiro.

# Acceso al Parque Se puede acceder al parque por varias puertas de entrada aunque, en esta ocasión, entraremos por la Puerta de O´donell por un motivo que más adelante será obvio. Son varias las estaciones de Metro cercanas la Parque, incluso una de ellas (Retiro) tiene una salida que da directamente al interior de éste. Sin embargo, para la propuesta de hoy la estación de Metro más indicada es la de Príncipe de Vergara. De la calle Príncipe de Vergara caminaremos unos minutos hasta la Puerta de O´donell que será nuestro punto de entrada al Retiro.

We are greeted by a fresh and very pleasant earthy aroma and a firm surface of mud and puddles. Despite the damp appearance of the ground, with care, you can walk without getting your shoes and clothes muddy. Amidst the yellow and ochre colors typical of autumn, we can see the Fisherman's House. A small house that watches us curiously over the waters of a small pond. That is our first point of reference. A few steps away, we come to the Paseo del Duque Fernán Núñez, a wide avenue flanked by two large rows of trees on either side. It is precisely on this wide paved street that one of the reasons for this visit can be found.

>Nos recibe un fresco y muy agradable aroma terroso y un firme sembrado de barro y charcos. A pesar del aspecto húmedo de la tierra, con cuidado, se puede caminar sin embarrar el calzado y la ropa. >Entre los colores amarillos y ocres propios del otoño se divisa la Casa del Pescador. Una pequeña casita que nos observa con curiosidad sobre las aguas de un pequeño estanque. Ese es nuestro primer punto de referencia. A unos pasos nos encontraremos con el Paseo del Duque Fernán Núñez, una gran avenida escoltada por dos grandes hileras de árboles a sus costados. >Es precisamente en esta gran calle asfaltada donde se haya uno de los motivos de esta visita.

# Madrid: Visual Memories of the Transition (1976–1979)

Arriving at Paseo del Duque Fernán Núñez, it is impossible not to notice the large cube-shaped structures that line this promenade for several hundred meters. These cubes are nothing more than the original support for the collection of photographs that make up the exhibition **Visual Memory of the Transition** (1976-1979). # Madrid: Memoria visual de la Transición (1976-1979) >Llegando al Paseo del Duque Fernán Núñez no pasan desapercibidas unas grandes estructuras en forma de cubo que, en forma de hilera, recorren a lo largo de unos cientos de metros este paseo. Cubos que no son otra cosa que el original soporte para la colección de fotografías que componen la exposición **Memoria visual de la Transición** (1976-1979). Una actividad que forma parte del Festival [Robert Capa estuvo aquí](https://festivalrobertcapaestuvoaqui.es/).

The authors of these images on display are two of the pillars of Spanish documentary photography: Juan Manuel Sánchez Vigil and Manuel Durán Blázquez. The exhibition has obvious historical interest. For those of us who lived in the Madrid portrayed in this exhibition, the Madrid of the working-class neighborhoods on the outskirts, it is an emotional return to childhood. Not only mine, but also my mother's. It happened during this walk; it was the first time I had seen a decent color photograph of the neighborhood where my mother was born and raised, my grandparents' house. As I said... exciting.

Para los que vivimos en ese Madrid retratado en esta muestra, el Madrid de los barrios obreros de la periferia, se trata de una emocionante vuelta a la infancia. No sólo a la mía, también a la de mi mamá. >Sucedió durante este paseo, ha sido la primera ocasión en la que he visto una fotografía en color y decente del barrio en donde nació y se crió mi madre, la casa de mis abuelos. Como he dicho… emocionante.

In the absence of the distractions typical of other seasons with their vibrant colors, crowds of pedestrians, birds... the images of that old Madrid made me reflect... I am a witness and participant in that history, and they have changed it. As Machado wrote: the future is not written, nor is the past. Juan Manuel Sánchez Vigil acknowledges that: >Photography decontextualizes because it is a fragment, a detail, part of a whole, and this premise makes it subjective, without meaning that what it represents is not real. # There is a little of this in this exhibition on the “transition” to democracy in Spain. Every human collective needs a founding myth, without a doubt, an Arcadia to look back on. However, in the founding myth brought to us by Juan Manuel Sánchez Vigil and Manuel Durán Blázquez, as in all mythology, the reality that compromises the myth itself is absent.

>En ausencia de las distracciones propias de otras estaciones del año con sus vibrantes colores, la multitud de paseantes, las aves… las imágenes de ese viejo Madrid me provocaron alguna reflexión… soy testigo y partícipe de esa historia y me la han cambiado. Como escribió Machado: el futuro no está escrito y el pasado tampoco. >Reconoce Juan Manuel Sánchez Vigil que: >La fotografía descontextualiza por su condición de fragmento, de detalle, de parte de un todo, y esta premisa la hace subjetiva, sin que por ello lo que representa no sea real. # >Un poco de esto hay en esta exposición sobre la “transición” a la democracia en España. Todo colectivo humano necesita de un mito fundacional, sin duda, de una Arcadia a la que volver la mirada. Sin embargo, en el mito fundacional que nos traen Juan Manuel Sánchez Vigil y Manuel Durán Blázquez , como en toda mitología, está ausente esa realidad que compromete al propio mito.

For example, among so many photographs, you can see a lot of low-rise houses. A large number of these single-story houses were built on land occupied by thousands of migrants. People who arrived in a city that awaited them without a roof over their heads. A forgotten odyssey. There is also a lack of reference to the violence that was experienced in Madrid's neighborhoods until almost the early 1990s. Not only do I belong to a generation that suffered the untimely departure of a good friend from my youth, but the statistics are also a good [testimony to the era](https://www.eleconomista.es/podcasts/noticias/13633561/11/25/cuando-espana-se-convirtio-en-el-pais-con-mas-atracos-a-bancos-del-mundo.html).

>Por ejemplo, entre tanta fotografía se puede apreciar mucha casa baja. Un número grande de esas casitas de un piso fueron construidas sobre terrenos ocupados por miles de migrantes. Gentes que llegaron a una ciudad que los esperaba sin un techo bajo el que pudieran encontrar cobijo. Una odisea olvidada. >Se echa de menos también alguna referencia a la violencia que se vivió en los los barrios madrileños hasta casi entrados los años 90,s. No sólo pertenezco a una generación que sufrió la marcha antes de tiempo de algún buen amigo de juventud, sino que las estadísticas también son un buen [testimonio de la época](https://www.eleconomista.es/podcasts/noticias/13633561/11/25/cuando-espana-se-convirtio-en-el-pais-con-mas-atracos-a-bancos-del-mundo.html).

We leave Paseo de Fernán Núñez behind and turn onto Paseo de Venezuela. On our right is the Gran Estanque del Retiro, and we pass through some bushes next to the Palacio de Velázquez, which is currently undergoing renovations and therefore not very visible. Our destination is the Crystal Palace, which is also undergoing renovation and is not visible either. Although it is currently covered by a large awning, you can see some images of the Palace in this publication. These images were taken in September last year, I think with my previous cell phone, at a time when you could still see something of it. This part of the park looks like something out of a fairy tale and is an ideal place for children. The colors change with the seasons. The Crystal Palace itself changes its magical natural lighting over the course of the months. The murmur of the water accompanies passersby. For children, the real stars are the birds. Especially two black swans, which I admire not only for their beauty but above all for their fidelity, which are the joy of the little ones.

Son imágenes tomadas en septiembre del año pasado, creo que con mi anterior teléfono móvil, momento en el que todavía se podía ver algo de él. >Esta parte del parque parece sacado de un cuento de hadas siendo un sitio ideal para los niños. Los colores van variando con la sucesión de las estaciones. El propio Palacio de Cristal cambia su mágica iluminación natural con el transcurso de los meses. El murmullo del agua acompaña a los viandantes. >Para los infantes, las verdaderas protagonistas son las aves. En especial dos cisnes negros, a los que admiro no sólo por su belleza sino sobre todo por su fidelidad, que son la alegría de los más pequeños.
