My favorite story about this bottle, is when a friend called me from out of state saying he would like to face time me because he was at a liquor store that had some good stuff. As I get the call he was showing me some bottles that have become hard to find but then he got to the Weller Antique 107 sitting there on the shelf at 22 dollars a bottle. I asked how many were on the shelf he said 6 so I asked for 4 of them.
This bourbon became one of my favorites because of the price and proof combination. Unfortunately this is a bottle that was once common, but has sense become a seldom pour due to scarcity and increased price.
This bottle looks like it has much to offer due to the color scheme and shape of the bottle. One thing to notice is that it has a screw top cap. Normally this is a sign of a cheaper whiskey but this is not the case with this bottle.
Color medium
Legs they coat the glass evenly and form drops slowly. After the drops start to travel down they increase in speed. Looking close at the swirl it’s almost as if the tops of the swirl has tiny sprouting branches.
Nose is great! Sweet is the first thing that comes up. It’s not a artificial sweet but more of a honey or rich caramel. Back end is sweet too, it reminds me of a cinnamon coffee cake. The is no strong barrel or oak smell.
Second visit the earth note takes on a milk chocolate soft and subtle.
Hand smell brings out more floral notes but I still don’t get strong oak
Taste: the first thing that you notice the heat. You get the oak on the finish it comes across with the heat from the proof but is a dry finish. As you exhale the heat disappears and you get a it’s pleasant floral taste.
Mouthfeel it’s mild. It hits the center of the tongue and instantly goes to the sides of the tongue.
Burn: it drinks true to its proof. It starts hot but it’s a nice burn.
Cost this is hard put a price on this because it fluctuates so much. It’s new retail is around 50 dollars but it’s a must buy at anything under 80 dollars. Sadly I have seen this as much as 150 dollars.
Over all reaction it’s an enjoyable bourbon. One of my favorite. This could be one of the more hyped bottles and yet it constantly delivers.
What is your bottle that you reach for when you want to have something some what special?
