Georgina's labor was progressing until a moment it wasn’t. So bad she had been pushing for some hours but the baby wasn’t forth coming, it then happened to be that her womb began contracting in a way that was no longer helpful to her and her neonate, It was really hurting her.
What was she experiencing? It is called an _"Obstructed Labor"it is a dangerous and as well a life-threatening complication that occurs during labor.
BANDL’S RING?
Bandl’s Ring, which is also known as pathological retraction ring, it is an abnormal tightening and separation that occurs between the upper and lower parts of the uterus during an obstructed labour. It can't be referred to as a normal part of childbirth delivery rather it's a warning sign that something is wrong somewhere.
This ring gets to forms when the uterus tries so hard to push out the baby but then the baby can’t descend due to an obstruction. This ongoing struggle initiates a constriction band across the uterus.
If these constrictions are not detected and treated immediately, it could lead to:
Bandl’s Ring usually results to;
• Obstructed labor (wrong position of the foetus, big or overweight foetus or even narrow pelvis).
• A long non-progressive Labour.
• Inappropriate application of labor stimulants such as oxytocin, without a proper monitoring).
• Delay in referring laboring mothers for an intervention.
• Signs of fetal distress.
• An obvious ridge forming across the belly.
• Abnormally rise of the uterus.
• Foetus not moving down the birth canal.
• Increased pain with no progress.
This condition calls for a medical emergency. A timely surgical delivery (Cesarean section) is often required to save the mother and baby.
Bandl’s Ring doesn't normally occur but when it does, time is everything, make use of it to savelife. That is why, regular antenatal care skilled birth attendance, , and timely hospital referral can actually make the difference between life and loss.
Don't ever ignore a prolonged labor. Don't allow anyone to tell you to “just push harder” for hours with no single progress. You deserve safe and a respectful care. And that is why there are gynaecologist and midwives yo help you through.
