I’d like to discuss sperm. A spermatozoon (alternate spellings spermatozoan, spermatozoön; plural spermatozoa) is a motile sperm cell, or moving form of the haploid cell that is the male gamete. (A non-motile sperm cell is called a spermatium.) A spermatozoon joins an ovum to form a zygote. A zygote is a single cell, with a complete set of chromosomes that would normally develop into an embryo. The term spermatozoon comes from two Greek words meaning seed and living being. Sperm cells contribute approximately half of the nuclear genetic information to the offspring. In mammals, the sex of the offspring is determined by the sperm cell: a spermatozoon bearing a Y chromosome will lead to a male (XY) offspring, while one bearing a X chromosome will lead to a female (XX) offspring—the ovum always provides an X chromosome.
Well now, isn’t that interesting? Please, bear with me; this is actually going some place. So, as soon as one little spermatozoan penetrates the egg, the egg excretes an acid that kills the rest. Thus physical life, for us, began. Now we come to the crux of the matter: The aspect of us that is the essence of us, that part that is eternal, the spirit, the soul, when does it connect to the embryo? Got guesses? Please let me know your view point on this. It is a question I have had rolling around in my brain for about five years and I still haven’t formed a good picture of this momentous event and I sincerely would like to have some input on the subject. In the holistic view, everything is composed of the three aspects of body, mind and spirit. The little spermoid (I made up that word because I like it better than spermatozoan) is the body. I think that when it penetrates the egg, at that moment the mind aspect is formed by the joining of the masculine with the feminine. The spirit: When does it connect? That is the question I would like some help with.
