Despite being potentially dangerous for a digital camera's sensor, a simple laser pen bought off fleabay can get create some great effects.
The lasers pens generally come with a splitter / diffuser to create adjustable beams of laser lines. So far, I've managed to avoid burning a sensor and I'm probably more careful with these things than holding on to burning fireworks! Full frame digital camera ain't cheap!
For best effect, it's necessary to use a lot of smoke whether it's an actual smoke grenade or smaller pellets from a DIY store. Another source of smoke is to have a friend who vapes; I don't! Smaller rooms require less smoke and the bigger venues require a whole lot more.
Subterranean Lightpainter
This was a Sunday afternoon spent inside a dark cave with smoke pellets and laser beams. One of the side effects of using so much smoke is that you end up with cinematic effects such as this. In the image here, I used two lasers, red and green
The Thing
To make the beam appear this huge you need a lot of smoke!
The Entrance to the Steel City
Shot under an undisclosed location in Sheffield this is a silhouette image with another silhouette inside. The laser makes a great frame around the larger figure.
All shot in one exposure.
Prismatic Nights
I managed to acquire a prismatic filter which makes everything double up in the image. Here I've shot the silhouette then freehand rotated the laser beams to create a laser circle. The prism creates a pleasing effect when rotated. Note to self: Do this again!
Equilateral Laser Beams
This is a simple silhouette but the camera was rotated three ways making my brain hurt!
No messianic tendencies here...move along
And one blast from a vape machine is all it takes to fill this lime kiln with smoke for the laser beams:
About me:
I usually specialise in shooting lightpainting images but occasionally dabble in urbex and artistic model photography. I'm always on the lookout for someone to collaborate with; please don't hesitate to get in touch if you'd like to create art.
