The morning in Asaba had started with the familiar, sweltering promise of heat and i, being a dedicated delivery rider, had spent the early hours navigating the bustling traffic of Nnebisi Road, my motorbike weaving expertly between the blue tricycles and crowded kiosks. The sky was a pale, cloudless blue, and the atmosphere was thick with the scent of dust and exhaust. With 2 packages strapped securely to my back, i was ahead of schedule, confident that i would clear my entire manifest before the late afternoon sun reached its peak.
By midday, however, the air underwent a sudden, heavy transformation. The heat which had been pressing down on the asphalt, was replaced by a sharp, cooling breeze that swept in from the direction of the Niger River. i looked up, squinting as the azure sky darkened to a bruised purple, i knew the signs well, but I kept pushing on, hoping to drop off a priority parcel at a shop near the Ogbeogonogo market.
