A winter storm warning was issued early this morning, promising to bring in freezing rain followed by snow. I needed a chicken to make soup, it's something I do whenever a winter storm is predicted. So off I went to our new shop in town.
This small place grows chickens for the eggs and poultry 🐔. They do not grow pheasants. But as I drove down our muddy road on my way to the market my eye caught something fluttering in the cut corn field. I quickly pulled over and cut the engine. Grabbing my camera I stepped out of the car to see what was happening in the field. Way off in the distance I could see some movement but I couldn't really see what it was.
Using my Cannon Power Shot SX530 HS with a 50x zoom, I managed to view several pheasants pecking for corn. I couldn't really see them very well with my naked eye but my zoom lens brought these boys into focus.
I just love this camera, I am always amazed how well the zoom works.
These colorful birds do not show themselves very often in the wild. If they do, I have not been at the right place at the right time.
They are pretty big birds, not as big as the wild turkey that are found in our area, but it was still pretty cool to capture these beauties with my camera.
In all the years we have owned the farm, this is only the second time I saw a pheasant, the first time I spotted one it was a female, not nearly as colorful as the males, I used my phone to snap a picture of it. I am fairly certain it was about the same time of year, early winter here in the mountains of Upstate New York.
Enjoy nature all you #featheredfriends lovers, #birdwatching is such a fun hobby.
