Russischer Bär ■ Jersey Tiger

Euplagia quadripunctaria (Poda, 1761)

The Jersey tiger is a moth of the bear spinner family (Arctiinae). The day-active moth loves flowers such as hemp-agrimony (Eupatorium cannabinum) or butterfly bush (Buddleja davidii). You can also watch him there during the day. Due to the warm temperatures of the last few days, this butterfly can also be observed earlier than in previous years. Normally the Russian bear flies from July to August in one generation. Mostly it can be found along forest paths where hemp-agrimony blooms. The Greek island of Rhodes must be mentioned as a special feature. On the island there is the valley of butterflies. Nowhere else in the world is there supposed to be a larger population of this moth in the smallest space than there.

After I had my picture taken with the wings closed, I tried to persuade the moth to open the wings. That was a bit too much and he was fluttering away. Sometimes you can't have it all. But I will surely meet him more often in the coming days. With a little luck, I'll be able to shoot with the wings open.
