I was all set to post a new photo on Pixaby. Tags done (#animals, #photograph, #cool), NFT licence configured with 11 holder rights, 2 visitor rights and a 5% royalty. I hit the button and... nope.
Account: failingforwards has 1772013 RC, needs 5469264 RC. Please wait to transact or power up HIVE.
If you've spent any time on Hive, that message will look very familiar. Word for word, it's the classic Hive Resource Credits error. It even tells me to power up HIVE.
What are Resource Credits anyway?
For anyone newer to this world, Resource Credits (RC) are how Hive style chains stop spam without charging fees on every action.
- Your RC comes from your staked (powered up) balance
- Every action you take, whether posting, voting, commenting or transferring, uses some RC
- RC slowly regenerates over time, roughly a full recharge over about five days
- Bigger or more complex transactions cost more RC
So no fee, but there's a speed limit, and the size of your stake decides how fast you can go.
Why did this one cost so much?
I had about 1.77 million RC, and the transaction wanted around 5.47 million. That's more than three times what I had in the tank.
My guess is the NFT licence is the culprit. A plain post is fairly light, but bundling in a full licence with a dozen or so rights, royalty settings and metadata makes for a much chunkier transaction. More data on chain means more RC.
The part I found most interesting
It looks like this corner of the system hasn't been tweaked from its Hive roots yet. Same mechanism, same thresholds feel, and the exact same error text, right down to telling me to power up HIVE.
That's not really a criticism. Building on proven code makes sense, and RC is a clever system. But it does raise some questions for the Pixaby team:
- Should NFT and licence transactions be costed differently? Creators are exactly the people the platform wants, and they're the ones doing the heaviest transactions.
- Could the error message be friendlier? Something like "You need about 3x your current RC. Try again in X days, or here's how to increase it" would help a lot.
- Is there room for RC delegation or onboarding help so new creators don't hit this wall on their first NFT?
Strangely, I'm glad to see it
Honestly, there's something reassuring about this. It reminds me that these problems aren't unique to one chain or one community. We're all wrestling with the same trade offs between keeping things free, keeping out spam, and not punishing genuine users.
It's a bit like failing forwards (pun fully intended). Each time one of these walls shows up, it's a chance for the builders to smooth it out and for the rest of us to understand how the machinery works under the hood.
What I'm doing now
For now I'm either waiting for my RC to recharge or powering up a little more (maybe I need some payouts!)
Lesson learned: check your RC before you build a fancy licence! (But how do you check it??)
Have you hit RC limits on Pixaby or another Hive based platform? Was it a big NFT transaction like mine, or something else? I'd love to hear in the comments.
