Helloooooooooo needleworkers, I'm back with another completed God Doll! Allow me to introduce you to CuChulainn:
He also ended up with bigger eyes like Brighid did, unintentionally, it just worked out that way. I follow my intuition when making the God Dolls more than I plan. But I think it fits, because in life (CuChulainn is a real live person who lived about 2000 years ago) he was always baby faced and taken for younger than he was. He didn't grow a beard in a culture where pretty much all the men had beards, which is probably the reason he was taken for younger a lot, so since big eyes are associated with younger faces, it works!
He is Lugh's son so he's got the same hair, which I made by painting yellow yarn with oil pastels (dip the paintbrush in turpentine substitute, then rub it on oil pastel that you've drawn on a paper like a palette, and it works rather like watercolors). It's brown at the roots, red in the middle, and blond at the ends - firey hair, because he's the son of the sun God! :)
In life, they were warriors and Laeg was the charioteer and CuChulainn was the fighter. I believe (and wrote it in my novel that way) that they were a couple. Pagans generally read the Ulster Cycle (the history/myth stories of their time period) and recognize that CuChulainn was very likely gay and Christians tried to erase it like they did to Alexander the Great and many others, but a lot of people think his lover was a man called Ferdiad macDaman. I think it was Laeg and not Ferdiad for a number of reasons, but I've talked about that before so I won't get into it here, lol. Anyway, so in my novel, they are married, so here they are happy that CuChulainn's doll is finally done. :)
Also, you'll see me refer to CuChulainn as Sé, because that is the name Laeg calls him in my book. He was given the name Setanta at birth and got the name CuChulainn later in his childhood (it means "Cullen's Hound"), because when he was seven years old he was supposed to follow his uncle (the king, Connor macNessa) to a meal at Cullen the blacksmith's house after he had finished his game of hurling. Well he did that, but Connor had forgot to tell Cullen that Setanta was coming after, so Cullen let his guard dog out to patrol the property. When Setanta got there, they heard the guard dog barking and growling and Connor realized his error and thought his nephew was going to be killed, but Setanta had his sliotar and hurley with him (think something like a bat and a ball, if you're unfamiliar with hurling), and hit the sliotar (the ball) at the dog and it shot into the dog's mouth and down his throat, killing him instead. Well then Setanta felt bad about killing the man's dog so he offered to patrol the property and be his guard until he could train the litter of puppies he had up to be good guard dogs. So he started being called CuChulainn, Cullen's Hound, because of this. But in the stories, Laeg is the only one who calls him by a nickname (though in other stories it's some variant of CuChulainn), and I thought it made more sense if it was a variant of Setanta because they had been friends since childhood, and Laeg was the only one who ever called him something besides CuChulainn so it was like, indicative of their relationship. So I often will call him Sé. :)
