How to Pass an IT Certification Exam on the First Try: A Practical Study Plan
Most people who fail a certification exam don't fail because they studied too little. They fail because they studied the wrong way: re-reading notes, watching videos at 1.5x, and never testing themselves under exam conditions. After helping a lot of candidates prepare for IT certifications, here is the study plan we keep coming back to.
1. Start from the official exam objectives
Every serious certification publishes a blueprint: the domains, their weightings, and the task statements. Print it. Every study session should map to a line on that list. If a topic isn't on the blueprint, it is a distraction.
2. Take a diagnostic practice test on day one
Before reading a single chapter, sit a full-length practice exam cold. Your score doesn't matter; the domain breakdown does. It tells you where your 60 days should go. Most people discover they are already fine in one or two domains and weak in the heavily weighted ones.
3. Study in short loops: learn, test, review
The loop that works:
- 45 minutes on one objective (docs, a course section, or a lab)
- 15 to 20 practice questions on that objective only
- Review every question, including the ones you got right by guessing
Active recall beats re-reading by a wide margin. Explaining why the three wrong answers are wrong is where the learning happens.
4. Do hands-on labs for the practical exams
For cloud and networking exams (AWS, Azure, Cisco), you need to have actually clicked through the console or typed the commands. A free-tier account or a packet simulator is enough. Scenario questions are written to catch people who only memorised definitions.
5. Two full mock exams in the final week
Sit them timed, in one go, no notes. Aim for a consistent margin above the pass mark, not a single lucky score.
