Those ants know their business and they will protect it! All the tiny little aphids on that plant are perfectly safe. Who wouldn't, if you had a bouncer the size of a building...
Of course everything is relative... My sandal would deal with all that in a second.
I actually found those by accident.. I was following some small butterfly that of course I didn't manage to catch. Resigned and tired I sat down at the edge of a lawn and was looking at the green plants and grasses around. And there they were. A whole aphid plantation feeding a colony of ants.
I heard in some NatGeo program that if there was a cataclysm on earth, that would wipe out everything, ants would probably be the only creature that would survive.
The truth is that they live nearly everywhere (except on Antarctica I guess; just like Lichens!), can swim dig, and create destruction armies.
Faster little aphids! Faster!!
