Just finished this and I'm incredibly disappointed. I'm going to give this book 2.5 stars because I really enjoyed Nugent's writing and I loved 80% of the book. These final 20% were so so bad they ruined the experience for me. Sally's arc completely crumbled, Pete learned nothing from his past or his father's mistakes, and the whole plot fell apart because the story lost its purpose. This book was so close: so close to being an extraordinary tale of trauma, so close to being one of the best books of the year, so close to being wonderful and well thought-out. We can argue that this book mimics life in a way, that there's not always a purpose and sometimes people don't learn any lessons from their mistakes. But that's part of the reason I like to read, to escape the terrible reality we have to see on the news every day (and some of us have to experience it first hand). I don't want yet another tragic ending, I don't want yet another criminal getting away with it and terrorising yet another woman. I don't want to see Sally regressing so after the two years she spent on therapy and all the progress she had. It doesn't make sense in the story Nugent was telling. Sally after Peter is not Sally at all. Mark was acting more like Sally than herself. She got completely blinded by her brother, which is incredibly out of character. So she goes through all that with Mark, always being so cautious, and then Pete appears and she completely transforms her own personality? Sorry about the rant, I'm too angry with this book.
