For the photography school I’m attending, we are judged every few months by a showcase session where we need to deliver a bunch of great photographs that show us we’ve learned what ever the previous course was about. We have no mandatory attendance, no other grades, no slap-on-the-wrist if we don’t do our homework, the only thing that matters are these showcase sessions.
For the first showcase I need to gather up 15 images that show I know the basics of photography and know how to take a good picture. They need to be all sorts of different kinds of photographs from scenery to portraits and what ever you can think of. To point is to show I can do lots of different kinds of images in different kinds of conditions and using both natural and artificial light. Some closeups, some nature, some people, animals, streets, interior, what ever.
There are no exact rules to what images need to be included, but they need to show variety. I should choose images I think are portfolio worthy and what I want to be judged on, and get feedback from real working photographers. Our own teachers wont' be evaluating us because they would for sure be biased. I really like this because then it will be the pictures that truly matter, not my amazing and warm personality...
I find this process to be a great thing to do because it makes me stop and actually see how much I have done and be proud of what I already have. I often get so down and unmotivated when for a while I don’t shoot anything I think is absolutely brilliant. I need to go back and look at my favourite images and realise I GOT THIS!
Here is a first set of images I’m thinking of choosing a couple from, to show I can do a nice vibrantly coloured scenery image.
