One of the most studied insects on the planet is red imported fire ant(RIFA) due to its notoriety and importance. Native to South America and accidentally introduced in Australia, several Asian, New Zealand and Caribbean countries and the United States.
The bite possesses a venom that leaves a burning sting, and in some cases can induce shock and kill their victims.
The RIFA is acknowledged as one of the worst pests of its kind in the world. In 2001, New Zealand suffered an infestation, it spent more than the equivalent of $883,500 and two years to successfully eradicate one nest.
Red imported fire ants thrive in urban areas their nest can be built under the structure such as pavements and foundations that can cause them to collapse. They are attracted to electricity, it reside on electric equipment and can destroy it.
