I like this:
A good rule of thumb is if you can't afford five of something, you can't afford one of it.
So true.
I recall the family I knew who had just paid their house off. They told me how they let someone talk them into buying a much larger house with a pool. They didn't need the space or the swimming hole, but bought in anyway in order to Keep up with the Kardashians neighbors who had one.
Now they're right back in debt again and a slave to the machine.
Your take on money reminds me of a doc I saw about how the wealthy lived. There was a woman who was worth over 350 million dollars. You think she'd have been thrilled, right? But no, she told the interviewer about her sleepness nights worrying about all the ways she colud lose it all, that 350 mil wasn't enough.
If she had a billion, she'd was 5, then 10 and so on. Still running on that hamster wheel unable to stop and smell the roses.
I read that when some rich people want an expensive item, they buy assets that will generate the returns needed to purchase the thing that they want. This way they get the expensive car for instance, and still have the dividend-producing asset to boot! Smart.
