All it would take for the price of gold to plumment would more advanced filtration technology. There is about thirty eight pounds of gold in a cubic mile of sea water. There are much greater concentrations of other valuable minerals. I can imagine a large platform in the ocean that sucks the water from the bottom, filters it completely providing all the minerals dissolved in it as well as gigatons of fresh water.
