Growing up in Greece in the '80s meant that we had only two TV channels, both of state television (ERT 1 and ERT2). So-called private television entered the market later, in the early 90s.

So in the 1980s, I remember myself, after playing outside, the neighborhood kids used to gather in order to watch our favorite shows at our house. Mind you, we had a big black and white Tv set.

So that's what the Twitter prompt from cinetv@cinetv brought back to my mind, and I want to share with you some of my favorite shows from the 80s

MacGyver

Who could have topped the list but the brilliant and resourceful as Ulysses (the ancient one) Mac Gyver who always saved the mission and got away at the last minute with his unique patents made from the simplest materials that he had on him. MacGyver could, as we used to jokingly say amongst ourselves, make a bomb using a match, a matchbox, and a rubber band. But MacGyver (remember his first name?) was a quiet man, a pacifist who never carried a gun on his missions and relied on human intelligence.

Our moms let us watch that show because they knew there was no violence and perhaps they thought that we could learn something from it. And, yes, he has a great influence on us: anyone who could know his way with machines and could fix them easily or was particularly inventive, we called him "MacGyver" (and still do).
And it was a series that made me believe in and love science. Fortunately or unfortunately, I was won over a little later by Indy and classical studies! Too bad, McGyver, I would have been a great assistant to you.

Knight Rider

David Hasselhoff was the teen idol of many young boys. They tried to imitate his style, a leather jacket, black clothes, and dark glasses. But most of all they were jealous of his car, KITT, a modified car, with its unprecedented for the 80s artificial intelligence. How awesome to be able to call your car and it would come on its own, without a driver. All the boys in our "gang" would put their watches close to their faces and say "KITT, come here". For us, Kitt was the real star.

The series was a great success in Greece.
I think its success was that sense of the future it exuded. And honestly, at the time we honestly believed there would soon be a car like this.

Fun Fact: The greek title of the series was "The Knight of Asphalt" (Don't ask me why, but the renderings of the titles of foreign films and series in Greek were sometimes very funny. I may have to write a post just about it).

Moonlighting

At that time I might have had a bit of a crush on Bruce Willis, because of that TvShow he starred in with Cybill Shepherd before he became the tough guy John McClane. The show was about two completely different people, the smart, gorgeous, but unlucky in her choices Maddie Hayes (oh, I loved her wardrobe and her style) and the street-walking, quick-witted Bruce Willis, who due to a sudden twist of fate are forced to coexist and solve mysteries together. There we learned for the first time that opposites attract.

How many episodes we waited until they understood the attraction between them, the tension that was love in disguise. The loud closing of the door to their offices was the hallmark.
Oh, since I mentioned the title thing before, this series' title in Greek was rendered "He, She and the Mysteries".

I would love to mention other series of the time: Miami Vice, Dukes, Dallas, Dynasty, (not to mention fame, I've written about that in another post), Charlie's Angel, Doctor Who, Star Trek (Oh, God there are so many of them), but I'll abuse your patience. So I will come back to you in another post.

Thank you for reading!
