It is the era of social media. Everyone is using them. It' s ok. You can admit that you too often look at your smartphones to check your alerts.
We are constantly networked on social media. We are now in social media! I think you will all agree that there are very few people who do not use any of the social media.
Their great impact is mainly due to the incredible opportunities they give their users in terms of communication, information, socialization, professional promotion, entertainment.
In essence, they eliminate borders and distances, they have immediacy, variety and -very important- freedom of expression.
But all of these possibilities make our lives sometimes (well most of the time make our lives more difficult - sometimes without even realizing it). Social networks have become an integral part of our lives, so much so that we forget to live life itself, to take pictures, to post the moment we "lived". We create virtual images of ourselves, not as we are, but as we would like to be. We are constantly in danger of being harassed, deceived, intimidated.
So, 
Τhe social network (2010)
One of the first - I think - movies that refer to social networks and perhaps the most powerful of them. This is the story behind the creation of Facebook, as depicted in the book "Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich. According to this version, it started with a divorce and a bitter genius student who set up an application to avenge his ex. His original idea impressed some investors who provided the necessary funding to bring together Zuckerberg and some of his classmates a team of developers and investors with the goal of creating an application that would conquer the world.
As much as this dream came true, however in my opinion the film reveals the ugly face of social networks: the bullying that can be done through them, but also the loneliness of modern man that no matter how much he tries to cover it there always there.
If I recommend you to see it? Probably, although I was not personally impressed by the interpretations or the script. However, it is one of those films where the subject itself predisposes you to think about human nature, greed and vanity.
Searching (2018)
On the contrary again, this movie is one that I would recommend you to watch.
A man who has lost his wife to cancer lives with his daughter in California. One day the teenage girl disappears and the father does everything to find her.
The title of the film has a double meaning. After the father is looking for his daughter who has disappeared, but the whole movie is shot on computer screens, as the father searches for his daughter with the help of social media and other applications (reminiscent of the well-known phrase on computer screens: SEARCHING).
So, having as a starting point the popular applications used by his daughter, this father enters a maze of applications (social networks, calendars, payments, etc.) to find his daughter folowwing the traces we leave behind whenever we use them.
It's one of the smartest and most original movies I've seen lately, a whole movie seen entirely through computer screens, phone and TV.
I know that there are many other films that refer to social media and touch on sensitive topics such as addiction to them, obsession with beauty and perfection, influencers, bowling. I found several modern ones in my search, which I have to admit I have not seen. But because social media is one of the topics I often discuss with my students I will ask you:
What movie have you seen on social media and would you advise a young person to watch it?
