Tasting beers in Bulgaria!

When you are in Rome, you do like the Romans. So when you are vacation in Bulgaria, you do like the Bulgarians and drink local beers.

And believe me, there are too many beers. I have been here for one day and a half and I have tried some of theirs, but the list isn' t getting any smaller.
Bulgaria has a big tradition in crafting beers and has many beer factories, but also microbreweries and craftbrewers.
So far, I have tasted these:
1 Zagorska! One of the most popular beers in Bulgaria, you can find it in almost every restaurant. A very light and easy to drink, it may accompany your dishes but it can also quench your thirst on hot days after walking around the city or from the spicy Bulgarian flavors. I personally found it a very pleasant beer, and I liked that I was given the opportunity to try it both bottled and tap.

And one of the most interesting things is that there are many small self-service cafes that serve beer, too. You can either take it with you to drink it in one of the many parks of Sofia or you can have it sitted at one of the few tables they usually have. But notice! they don't serve chips or nuts complimentary to the beer. You have to buy them extra (no biggie though, they are quite cheap).

2 Another personal favorite was Shumensko. Also a must have with lunch or dinner. A bit bitterish in my opinion (but personally I like bitter beers), but quite light and enjoyable. The combination of kebab dish that I had in that restaurant along with Shumensko was excellent to the taste.

For this lunch we preferred Sumensko on tap.

There is also the bottled edition, unfortunately the photos are not so clear. These are from our dinner the first night in a traditional Bulgarian restaurant.

3 Kaminitsa! I have tried this one on my previous travel in Bulgaria, so it wasn't a stranger to me. Light beer,it reminds me of Heineken, a drink to have at the bar or at the club. Not one of my personal favorites, but not one that I wouldn't recommend you to taste. After all, all depends on personal preferences and tastes

4 Today the weather was strange, one moment it was sunny, the next one raindrops fell. Drink one of these times, we chose to sit at the cafe in the park and drink and drink something until the sun comes up again. Luckily, the moment we sat down, the sun came up again,so we enjoyed our beer in sunlight. This time we chose Stolichno Weiss. a full-bodied dense taste in my opinion which correctly highlighted the aroma of hops. The waiter was quite helpful and gave us the proper instructions on how to fill our glasses and refresh the bottle at the end to enhance its taste and aroma.

5 But the winner so far is: Bohem red (it is written in cyrrillic БοxemЪ Granat). A rich, full taste,worthy of its name -bohemian- that fills you with the taste and the aroma of a true red beer. I loved it and be certain that if I find it again available at a bar or restaurant I will have a few of them.

I simply adored the bottle. Red is my color (you can guess it from my name) and the design was exquisite.

But what is most amazing are the prices of beer here in Bulgaria. Most of them cost around 3 leva and some around 5 leva. In Euro that means they cost about 1.50 or 2.00 to 2.50 euros. Of course it depends on the store price policy. Self service cafes are quite cheap.
I haven't tried it yet crafted beer, still learning my whereabouts in Sofia, but be certain that I will upload another post about them.
