Rats in the Wall
Shrill whispers in the night,
A faint patter, patter, patter,
And scratching at your door.
You jolt to life with animal
Instincts prepared to take on
The unkown lurking predator.
Your tiny intruder is exploring
This mysterious landscape,
Making itself a new home.
Looking out into the darkness
You see only the faint moonlight
Dancing in an ocean around your bed.
Millions of years separate you and the pest,
Yet in this moment two bodies
Are frozen in sweat by a run away pulse.
In the empty room, your body recalls
Impulses you did not know existed,
And fear fills the void.
