Leadership

Today, while passing the morning
In a solitary run by a frozen river
I happened upon a flock of wild geese.

Giving no care to what brought such
A tiny band of fowl so untimely to
This frozen path and why they had not

All sailed to warm climates for winter,
I purposed to pass quietly by them,
Giving each a generous berth.

But here is where I found my morning’s lesson,
When passing on my way about them,
Each bird retreated with submissive bent heads.

That is, each scattered, excepting a sole
Defender, who with penetrating eyes watched,
Until I had fully passed and the flock

Was secured from my potential threat.
Then each resumed their own preoccupations,
But that lone warrior watched till
I disappeared around the bend.
