I Have Never Known Famine
Yes, I have been hungry.
Like that time I forgot to
Eat breakfast and was angry
All the way to lunch.
Or the day when I came
Home late from work
And was short with everyone
Till my feet were up and stomach full.
Yes, I have known hunger of the soul.
When the night lasts longer than
I had ever remembered it being,
When loneliness becomes my only companion.
When I ache for some purpose
To seek my teeth into,
And a morsel of meaning to sustain
This work weary soul.
But, I have never known famine.
I have never felt my stomach
Clawing at the walls of abdomen,
Yearning to find something, anything.
I have never seen my body consume
Itself in a desperate attempt to survive,
Nor watched as the fate of my flesh
Was placed in the dice.
Have I escaped the malice
Of Darwin's old game?
Am I simply an anomaly,
Or the new part and parcel?
What do I do now that my body
Will never know want?
The heart still craves enough for the both,
Perhaps there are new fields to till.
