The truth is that I really enjoy learning the cultural details of the different cities in Spain. One place that captivates me and from which I have been able to learn details is Sitges. In recent days, just the Thursday following the eighth Sunday after Easter, in honor of the sacrament of the Eucharist, Corpus Christi was celebrated. For this, this town prepares with time and organizes the elaboration of beautiful floral carpets. This tradition is in charge of the local authorities with the collaboration of the whole population. All the schools, the town hall, the neighbors of the streets and other representatives of the cultural and social environment of Sitges participate.

Days before, the places are distributed, the plans of the carpets, and the materials are obtained. It is a tradition that the elderly collaborate by selecting the petals by color to facilitate the elaboration of the catifas.

The night before, they began to mark the streets with the designs and finished in the early hours of the morning. The next day, very early in the morning, everyone got down to work to create the magic of the flower carpets.

Around ten o'clock in the morning people began to parade through the flower-carpeted streets, everyone feared a sudden rain, so no one wanted to miss out on enjoying such ephemeral beauty.

All铆 estaban los ni帽os y ni帽as que un mes antes hab铆an recibido la primera comuni贸n, fue un acto muy bonito que todos pudimos compartir.

Each one of the creations of the flowery carpets was more beautiful than the previous one. A very pleasant scent flooded the streets and the people were infected with the great joy produced by the beauty of the colorful flowers.

So the afternoon went by until at six o'clock began the celebration of the mass in the emblematic church of Sitges, whose name is shared by Santa Tecla and San Bartolom茅.
There were the boys and girls who a month before had received their first communion, it was a very nice act that we could all share.

Again, we headed to the central point where all the town's festivities are celebrated. "El cap de la Vila" while the children went out in procession stepping on the carpets of flowers, together with the ecclesiastical authorities, and the bands and groups that usually accompany them. When arriving where we waited for them, a short mass was officiated next to the old giants of the town. These giants are more than one hundred years old and have just been restored. They, together with the new giants, the Moorish kings, the cubanitos, the eagle and the dragon, are present in each of the important dates of Sitges.

As soon as the mass was over, small drops of rain began to fall, alerting the spectators, plans were hastily changed and the procession that had to go through the main streets of Sitges had to be diverted directly to the church where the children could take shelter.

馃嚜馃嚘 La Moxiganga Cristiana tambi茅n formaba parte de la procesi贸n.

The Moxiganga Cristiana was also part of the procession. It is one of the oldest and most deeply rooted traditions in Sitges, and has been celebrated for more than 400 years. It is a manifestation of religious faith and devotion, and attracts many visitors each year. Participants wear traditional costumes and carry different symbols and banners related to religion. Due to the rain they passed quite quickly in front of me forming their complicated human figures. Another unforeseen problem to be solved was where the giants, some recently restored and others very well groomed and well painted, could be sheltered. The rain was not part of the plans. Because of their large size they can only enter the palace of the Moorish king or the town hall. There was no time to think about it, so the giants also went to the church, as well as the eagle and the dragon. A clear message of inclusion and equality for all who make life in this town. The giants brushed the lamps of the church that was filled with the faithful, tourists and the curious. It was a fun time for everyone, even for the parish priest, who had just returned from an illness and was very happy with the great participation in the events.

I did not manage to enter the church (my granddaughter told me about it) and when the big storm broke out, I could only welcome it with joy after all the moments I had experienced during such an intense day.

The next day there was no trace of flowers, everything was working under the usual routine and it seemed that the magical day we had lived would only remain in our memories.
That is a great reason to decide to share it with everyone and if someday you have the opportunity come to know this place so rich in traditions, art and culture.
