(faz scroll para a versão Portuguesa) A week ago we returned from a short trip to Germany. Like many of the cities in central Europe, Munich has lots of gardens all over the city where several species of birds and more ubiquitous mammals dare to live close to humans and even to approach them. It is a delightful experience to have a Great Tit just a few inches away. This approaches are more frequent during the winter when the birds make huge efforts to obtain food, and take a little more risks. Well, throughout the city I saw awareness posters that motivated residents to buy (or make) winter feeders for the city’s birds! I thought it was a great idea. This is a very effective way of attracting biodiversity to our gardens and vegetable gardens so I followed some suggestions from [this book](http://www.therabbithole.pt/2018/01/22/book-review-pratical-illustrated-guide-attracting-feeding-garden-birds/) and made these seed cakes and dried fruit decorations to feed the birds of my mother’s garden! __Seed Cookies:__ There is not an oficial recipe. But you should have in mind that the main sources of energy that birds need during winter are fats and carbohydrates. Therefore you should use a fat as a base (usually animal fat, such as lard, as many birds feed on insects and other invertebrates like worms and larvae) and seeds on your feeder. Basically just mix the melted fat with various seeds: nuts, corn, oat flakes, sunflower seeds, peanuts and of course, the traditional rice. The ratio is one part of fat to two parts of seed mix. Pour the mixture into yogurt cups or cupcake molds and let them solidify. To be safe when hanging the cakes on the trees, I usually use a piece of string or rope (don’t use nylon string because it is transparent and might hurt the birds; make the string visible for them), and place a wire in the center of the cupcake when placing the mixture, like a wick of a candle. This way, as soon as it solidifies, it is ready to hang! __Dried fruit decorations:__ Using a wire jab some dehydrated fruit, like cranberries or blueberries, and then give it shapes: a heart, a star. It is also possible to use a thread and a needle and make a garland! I made a video for you to follow this one. There is a great variety of seeds and fruits to use. It all depends on the preferences of the species you find in your garden. However, this basic recipe is a “go to” for you to get to know the biodiversity of the surrounding area and, gradually, adjust the recipe to satisfy the tastes of your guests! _Há uma semana regressamos de um pequeno passeio na Alemanha. Assim como muitas das cidades no centro da europa, Munique tem imensos jardins um pouco por toda a cidade onde diversas espécies de aves e mamíferos mais ubíquos não se inibem de viver perto dos seres humanos e até de se aproximarem mais do que o habitual. É uma especirência deliciosa ter um chapim a apenas alguns centímetros de distância. Esta aproximação é habitualmente mais forte durante o Inverno porque, no esforço para obter alimento, as aves arriscam-se um pouco mais. Ora, um pouco por toda a cidade eu vi cartazes de sensibilização que motivavam os residentes a comprar (ou fazer) alimentadores de Inverno para as aves da cidade._ _Esta é uma forma muito eficaz de atrair biodiversidade para os nossos jardins e hortas pelo que segui algumas sugestões [deste livro](http://www.therabbithole.pt/2018/01/22/book-review-pratical-illustrated-guide-attracting-feeding-garden-birds/) e fiz bolinhos de sementes e decorações de frutos desidratados para alimentar as aves do jardim da minha mãe!_ __Bolinhos de sementes:__ _Não há propriamente uma receita. Mas há que ter em conta que as principais fontes de energia necessárias para as aves são as gorduras e hidratos de carbono. Por isso ter uma base de gordura (normalmente animal, como a banha de porco, pois muitas aves alimentam-se de insectos e outros invertebrados como as minhocas e larvas) e sementes é indispensável. Depois basta misturar a gordura derretida com sementes diversas: nozes, milho, flocos de aveia, sementes de girassol, amendoins e claro, o tradicional alpista. A proporção é de uma parte de gordura para duas partes da mistura de sementes. Depois de bem incorporado deitar em copinhos de iogurte ou formas de cupcake e deixar solidificar. Para que fiquem seguros ao pendurar nas árvores, eu costumo usar um pedaço de fio do norte ou corda (evitar o fio de pesca que é transparente e pode emaranhar as aves), e colocar um arame no centro do cupcake como se fosse um pavio de uma vela antes de colocar a mistura. Desta forma, assim que solidificar está pronto a pendurar!_ __Fios de frutos desidratados:__ _Usando um pedaço de arame, espetar fruta desidratada como arandos ou mirtilos e depois dar-lhe formas: um coração, uma estrela. Também é possível usar um fio e uma agulha e fazer uma espécie de grinalda! Eu fiz um vídeo deste para que possam acompanhar o processo._ _Há uma grande variedade de sementes e frutos para utilizar. Tudo depende das preferências das espécies que encontrarem no vosso jardim. Contudo, esta receita base é uma forma de conseguirem conhecer a biodiversidade da zona envolvente e, aos poucos, irem ajustando os ingredientes para satisfazer os gostos dos vossos convidados!_
